AUTUMN SUNSETS - from Crosby's Serpentine*

Autumn evening, and the grey clouds loom,
When there beyond the threatening gloom
Roseate mountains now appear
A wonderous sight, my heart to cheer.

A thing apart from earthly care,
Suspended lightly in mid-air.
Pearly clouds surround each peak
Entranced I watch. I cannot speak.
'Til my fill of the loveliness of that beautiful sight is wrung.

And now old Sol, with one great glow
Transforms the rose to gold.
Then, sinking low to his night-time haunts
Disappears, and the world seems cold.

The mountains now are dull and grey
Gone are the clouds of pearl.
Gone are the glorious shafts of gold which set my heart awhirl.
So home I go with a heavy heart,
But stay, no need for sorrow.
Those mountains pink, and pearl and gold
Will no doubt be there tomorrow.
